Messages from Big Island, Hawaii, in Japanese and English
I have experienced big natural disasters in my life.
I was in Osaka (not too far from the epicenter) when Hanshin Awaji Earthquake (M 7) and I was in Tokyo (again not too far from the epicenter) when Tohoku Earthquake (M 9). When I experienced the latter one, I thought I would die. I have had enough scary experiences. Each time the natural disaster happened, I became more cautious and started to prepare “emergency kits” at home. Those items include below. - A knapsack packed with a flashlight, some dry food, batteries, first-aid kits, small radio, etc. (better to have a knife or can opener) - Extra batteries (I remember right after a big earthquake in Tokyo, my colleague and I were looking for getting batteries for our phone in the town) - Slippers (placed near the bed. If blackout happens after a big shake, some glasses could be scattered on the floor, and your foot get hurt in darkness), - Plastic bottles of water - Filling the bathtub with water (Right after the earthquakes, I was filling the bathtub with lots of water for a while. Once waterline stops, it is VERY HEAVY to carry water) - Flashlight which can be started manually is useful - Cans of food And others. After months passed, I forget how fearful I was. I started to drink the water out of stock, eat the food and use everything from those stock. That is NOT good at all. We should keep refilling those emergency stock and get prepared all the time. Here in Hawaii, emergency happens. One day, my husband woke up early and was outside already. Then, he heard a WARNING OF NUCLEAR ATTACK. It was found out to be a false alarm (what on earth a false alarm of nuclear attack comes out??!! I still do not get it). My husband told me what happened. Luckily, I was sleeping in the day and did not know about it. If I had been up already, I might have been so panicked! He looked calm when he told me, but I knew he got so freaked out inside. From the day, He got very conscious and started to get prepared for emergency. Under this political situation, it is wise for us to get prepared just in case. If we are ready for emergency, we can react calmly if something happens. Oh, and another important one. Toilet papers! 🌠Another Blog: God Bless America🌠 mikomagicalisland.weebly.com/ Comments are closed.
