Messages from Big Island, Hawaii, in Japanese and English
The trip from Florida to Hawaii was long. It took about 15 hours.
Honestly, domestic flight in the US is not always fun.
The domestic flight charges us 25.00USD per baggage if we check them in.
If the whole family travel together by 4 or 5 members, they have to pay a lot. They may not want to check in all their baggage.
So, everyone tries very hard to bring them in to the cabin.
Once I have tried hard to save 50.00USD, which is for both ways.
One time, I tried to put everything I need and squeeze them into one bag, and tried to carry it in the cabin.
My poor bag was swollen and became so thick.
When I went to the air company counter, the air company staff said,
“You have to check in the bag. It is too thick and cannot fit in the bin.”
I was taken this bag at the last minute.
When I arrived in the last destination, I went to the carousel to get the fat bag.
However, the black bag never appeared on the carousel. I went to the office behind of the carousel to claim for my bag.
We found out somebody took mine by mistake.
The good thing was the person who took it will come to bring it back, and get their own bag.
I went to the hotel to take a nap after the midnight flight to prepare for the business meeting in the evening. I had to wait for the call to be delivered.
The bag was finally delivered, but some clothes (somehow my old clothes) in my bag disappeared….
Each time people go on board, it takes a long time because everybody tries to put the bag in the bin above their head. As more people come in, they have a hard time to find a space to squeeze their bags inside of the bin, which is almost full.
When we go out from the cabin after arrival, people have to bring down the heavy bags from the upper bin. Sometimes it is very dangerous because everyone is hurry to bring down them from the bin above head and it could hit others.
I almost did this. During one of my trips, I squeezed so many things in my bag and I made it to bring in to cabin.
I put the big bag in the upper bin. After arrival, I tried to bring it down. Because it was so heavy and packed, the bag pulled me and the bag was flying in the air.
It really scared me. If somebody were close to me then, I could have hit her or him by the heavy bag.
Sometimes, during my business trip, the schedule changes at the last minute and I have to fly to cold areas from warm areas. I do not want to run out of my clothes and do not want to feel cold, so I always bring extra clothes.
I finally gave up. I decided to check in my big trunk with every necessary thing in it.
I put lots of Hello Kitty stickers all over the black trunk. Kitties are also my guardians. I ask them to make sure the trunk comes with me together.
In addition to these stress, we also have security check time issues.
Recently, there were news that people who had gotten to the airport 2 or 3 hours ahead of the departure could not make the plane that they had tickets!!!
This happened because TSA security checks took long. They said something like there were too many travelers.
Security checks are VERY IMPORTANT and CRUCIAL FOR OUR SAFETY, and the importance has been increasing more and more these days.
However, I am not the only one who gets really stressed out by whole situations that we face in the plane travel.
Isn’t there any way to improve this situation?
One thing is to improve alternative public transportation in the US mainland, I think.
I have seen many people in waiting list for the plane each time I fly.
One time, I have seen one young lady waiting for the flight overnight. If there is another alternative such as super-fast train, she could have just hopped into it.
If the US could introduce super train like bullet train (Japanese Shinkansen) connected between various cities, it would give alternative public transportation to people, who are not that hurry and prefer to cheaper travel.
It could mitigate this crazy air travel of hustle and bustle.
This is same with the issue of “Crammed train” in the rush hour in Japan. These kind of issues have to be taken care by the national government.
In the US. it has to be done by the Federal Government.
If these stress gets mitigated, more people will try to travel and move around, and it could lead to stimulate economic activities as well.
