Messages from Big Island, Hawaii, in Japanese and English
The guide showed us around the Ranch House where Mr. and Mrs. Regan spent their private time. (Taking pictures was prohibited inside of the house.) The house was surrounded by nature of vast ranch. The cozy and private space seems to be the only place where Nancy Reagan could get his darling alone for herself. It must have been very precious place and space for the First Couple I heard that Mrs. Reagan had a time to be criticized by mass media “being gaudy”. However, when you see her real life and private space, you may be surprised how simple and humble they were. Those were not exposed to public. The couple have values things and used them carefully for a long time. We saw an old style tube television sitting in their living room. They used the TV set for decades without updating to a new one. Fixtures and small items in the shower room are preserved as they are. They showed us their bed room. However, something looked so unique… Two single beds were put together side by side. The guide said there were originally 2 single beds in the house. They were owned by a former owner of this Ranch House before Mr. and Mrs. Reagan moved there. President Reagan and Mrs. Regan did not buy a new king sized bed for them. What they did was to keep using those 2 single beds and put them together (by strings or something) and turn them into one king bed, so that they could sleep together. However, the old single bed was not long enough for the tall man like Regan. Both of his feet were hanging at the edge of the bed. Thus they put a foot rest at Regan’s side, so he could rest his feet to sleep. On the side table at Reagan’s side, a traditional (old) phone was put, so that the President could be connected with the world for emergency. (To be continued) Comments are closed.
