Messages from Big Island, Hawaii, in Japanese and English
- Cats in Wonderland - Relationships with cats has been long in my life. Even after I moved to Hawaii, wherever I went or stayed, I have been surrounded and contacted by cats. Cats are very lovely, mysterious and funny creatures. It is said that they have been also immigrants from another planet in the Universe which is very convincing to me. This animal give us lots of fun, peace, healing and laughter to our life. Cats give us indescribably lovable feeling for life. When I was living in Osaka with my family, Mike neko (a calico cat) started to live with us. We called the beautiful female cat, “Mew chan” because she was always crying “Mew”. (as regular cats do) She lived with us more than 10 years ago. I remember she came up to my lap and curled up in there while I was talking on the phone. When I was reading newspapers on tatami mattress in the living room, I found Mew chan on my back. I was lazy and did not to want to be bothered to use a table, and was kind of crouching down on the tatami mats and reading the paper. She jumped on my back and curled in there too. I still miss her so much. When I came to Hawaii to marry with my husband, he was keeping a big cat. He adored the big and beautiful cat. The cat was very funny to play with, but she often tried to scratch. Thus, she was given such a long name, “Scratchy Scratchy”. My husband was petting her a lot before he went to work. I came to see him off and was staring at the cat while my husband was petting him and playing with him. My husband was surprised, “Yumiko, are you really jealous to this cat?” Yes, I was. J (At that time, I thought the cat was female.) While we were staying at our uncle’s house for a while, I came friends with Tobby, a neighbor’s big cat. First time I went to our neighbor’s house to greet, I saw a big plate with various food placed at the entrance of their house. I came to know later that the dinner plate was for Tobby. What a happy cat! When I came outside to do exercise in the morning, Tobby often jumped out from somewhere. He approached me with sleepy face. He must have been running around all night for hunting. He ran to my side, and quickly lied on the grass and asked me for petting. I came out to refresh myself, though… Various mysterious things have happened with cats. One of my mentors once told me, “Cats are spiritual creatures. They are also very intellectual. Give a good care and cherish them. They may guard and protect you.” I am really convinced so by my own experiences. (Continued) Comments are closed.
